Inland fishing.

I currently have family living along side the black wood river(In Bridgetown) I have been fishing there a few times but have had no luck with lures. I was hoping to catch some trout or redfin perch but didn't even get a hit. I took a kayak out and saw a large crossbred Coy- goldfish. Which wasn't easily spooked but wasn't interested in worms or lures . The most success I've had was at dusk and dawn where i have gone down to a small section of rocks with worms as bait and a simple rig and caught a few big Carp and quite a few small cobbler. i have took a carp home and released it into my dam but I'm quite sure it died but am curious why. If any one knows how to catch fish on lures in these environment please let me know, also if there is some more species of fish that are easily caught also let me know.
